Background & Goal
There was a business need to satisfy our manufacturing customers to take an existing complex product lifecycle management software application and make it much easier to use for non-expert users. The goal of this project was to develop a suite of role-based and tasked-based desktop applications that focus on the needs of the non-expert user.
My Role
As the UI Designer, I was tasked with building the UI of this suite of apps using the new design system guidelines and components which was exciting and challenging at the same time.
Design Process
Using Agile methodology, as a scrum team, we had sprint planning meetings, daily stand-ups and two-week sprints. We used JIRA to create epics and stories for each team member and I used Zeplin to share the visuals with the dev team. As the UI Designer, I was the liaison between this team and the Design System team, making sure that we were keeping a consistent look and feel, branding and experience.

I received wireframes from the UX Designer.

I determined which design system components were needed to create the UI.

I designed the UI of each screen.

I exported the visuals to Zeplin.

I had one-on-one meetings with developers to make sure the UI met the specs.

I lead final design reviews before the release was launched.

Throughout the process, I needed to collaborate with the dev team as well as Marketing, QA, and User Assistance.

Competency Highlights
I demonstrated the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and be a motivated team player. I was successful in implementing the design system components in the UI, meeting project deadlines and delivering a user-centric product based on specific requirements from stakeholders.
What I learned
I learned that working closely with a development team is key to implementing a great UI. The journey to a great product requires clear communication and tight collaboration.
